Avoiding The Big Black Hole

When submitting your resume, avoiding The Big Black Hole is really difficult. The Big Black Hole (TBBH), is the place your resume goes when you respond to a position listed on one of the job posting websites. You have about the same chance of it getting fished out as you would had you stuffed it into a bottle and threw it in the ocean.

How frustrating is it to address your cover letter to “To Whom It May Interest”, or whatever creative greeting you may invent? How comforting is it to get the autoresponder, “Thank you for submitting . . .” email as the “system” sucks up, dices and sorts your hard-earned professional accomplishments into disjointed, query-optimized, keyword-relevant chunks.

Just maybe, at some point in the distant future, if you have the exact credentials, if your salary requirements are at or below the range (which is rarely posted, so you have to guess and hope your answer doesn’t disqualify you before they even look at the rest of the application), and if the planets align, you might get someone to respond.

Hopefully, you’ve kept good records, so that if do get a response you actually know what position the person is referring to. Because (we forgot to mention above) you didn’t even know who the hiring company was when you applied, (and hopefully it wasn’t the one you currently work for).

Wanting to find a better job, and not just a new one is certainly worthy of time and effort. If you are going to make a move, it should be to your next dream job, not an exercise in chasing the impossible dream.

When you work with a reputable recruiter, the mystery goes away. When you work with a reputable recruiter, you have a direct connection to the company, the job details, and a walking, talking advocate in your corner.
